What to wear for family photos

The best family photos feel like you, not like a catalogue. After more than ten years photographing families in London, these are the simple choices that work.

Pick two or three colours that go together

Cream, denim, soft green or muted rust look good together and sit well against a studio backdrop or an autumn park. You do not need to match. Coordinating is enough.

Avoid big logos and loud patterns

Bright slogans and busy prints pull the eye away from faces. Plain textures, knitwear and simple layers photograph best.

Think about comfort

If children are happy and warm, the photos show it. Choose clothes they can move in, and bring one spare outfit for little ones.

Studio or outdoor

In my Stratford studio, next to Westfield, you can wear lighter layers because it is warm. For outdoor sessions across London, add a coat or scarf that suits your colours.

If you are unsure, send me a photo of what you are thinking of wearing and I will tell you what I think before the session.
